Professional Experience
JANELLA N. SMYTH is President of Accredited Appraisal
Associates, Inc., an appraisal and consulting firm of
independent appraisers of antiques, decorative art and fine
arts.
Ms. Smyth has been an Accredited Senior Appraiser of the
American Society of Appraisers since 1992, and served the
organization in a number of positions on the national level
over the past fifteen years. She served from 2000-2004 as
ASA’s Regional Governor for Region 3 (the states of Maryland,
Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and
the District of Columbia.) She was appointed by two ASA
International Presidents to serve as a member of the ASA task
force for Strategic Alliances. She also served in a variety
of capacities on the International Personal Property
Committee of ASA since 1992, including two terms as Chairman
and numerous terms as treasurer. Ms. Smyth was a Co-Editor of
The Appraisal of Personal Property, the textbook used
by the American Society of Appraisers for their core courses
in valuation instruction for personal property appraisers.
She served as a contributor and editor for an updated release
of that textbook. Ms. Smyth served as President of the North
Carolina Chapter of ASA and as secretary/treasurer of that
chapter. She is in compliance with ASA’s requirements for
completion of continuing education, including the USPAP
(Uniform Standards of Appraisal Practice) course. She helped
to organize and attended a Master Class in Appraisal Report
Writing in 2001. She also served for over ten years as the
Managing Editor for The Personal Property Journal, the
scholarly quarterly publication of the Personal Property
Committee of ASA. In 2005 Ms. Smyth was awarded the
designation of Fellow of the American Society of Appraisers.
Education
Ms. Smyth holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from
Texas Tech University.
Ms. Smyth is a personal property appraiser designated in
Antiques and Decorative Arts and specializing in silver,
textiles, glass, furniture and other furnishings and
decorative accessories. She has performed appraisals for
individuals, universities, churches, state agencies,
manufacturers, law firms, major insurance companies for
scheduling property and settling claims, and numerous museums
including the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Old
Salem, North Carolina Museum of History, North Carolina
Museum of Art, Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum,
Houston Museum of Decorative Arts, and others.
